The Throat Chakra – Are You Speaking Your Truth With Love?
The Human Aura & Chakra System
Since most of cannot see our chakras, it becomes rather difficult to imagine what they look like and the color they emanate. Surrounding our body is an electromagnetic field of energy known as the aura, and it expands around the body to represent our physical, emotional, mental and spiritual energetic bodies. Within our energy field we have 7 chakras (chakra means ‘spinning wheel of light’) that correlate to a specific color or frequency, which begins at the base of the spine and ends at the top of the head. We are, literally, a rainbow of colors and within the 7 chakras we can also find smaller energy centers throughout the body, including the hands and feet, known as meridian points in Chinese medicine.
Depending on how balanced your chakras are, the colors and type of energy they radiate can vary in brightness and strength. They can become dull, discolored, blocked or completely shut down as a result of any dissonance within the mind, body or spirit. Energy flows into and out of our aura and chakra centers, so we can easily pick up energy from others and also project our energy outwards. When our chakras are out of balance, they affect our overall wellbeing and health. When this occurs, we can develop diseases and dysfunctions in the body. When they are balanced, they spin and emanate energy in a fluid, smooth manner throughout the body. The image below gives us an accurate image of what they would look like if we had eyes to see them:

Self Expression Through the Throat Chakra
Summer is the perfect season to express our creative self through projects or artistic endeavors, whether through painting, ceramics, writing, drawing or photography (the list is endless). So, let’s take a deeper look at the energy centre of the body that represents self-expression: the throat chakra, or fifth chakra, named ‘vishuddha’ in Sanskrit, which means ‘pure’ or ‘purification.’ It’s located at the base of the neck, between the heart and the head, and is the central hub of communication and expressed creativity. By virtue of where it’s located, it becomes the intermediary between our thoughts and emotions. In order for it to be purified, it must be open, balanced, and radiating a vibrant color. Even though it’s the communication zone, it not only implies speaking but also deep listening.
Symbol, Color, Organs & Attributes
The symbol is a crescent with a circle inside of it with 16 beautiful petals around it. The color is sky blue or turquoise blue, and is associated with the element of ether or sound. The mantra associated with it is ham.
The organs and physical attributes linked to the throat chakra are the thyroid and parathyroid glands, vocal cord, esophagus, teeth, mouth, jaw, tongue, neck, trachea, cervical vertebrae of the spine, shoulders, and arms. The thyroid gland is located at the base of the neck and is responsible for regulating the body’s temperature and releasing hormones into the bloodstream to reach cells. It maintains metabolism, body weight, cholesterol levels and heart rate among other things.
Balanced Throat Chakra
When our throat chakra is balanced, we have the ability to articulate our thoughts, ideas and feelings in an appropriate and loving manner. We easily and effortlessly express our truth, purpose in life or vocation, and creativity. The throat chakra focuses on expressing and projecting our creativity into the world in an authentic fashion.
When all is well, you can easily find the words to express yourself and make yourself understood. Likewise, you can give sound advice to others when asked, and it’s expressed diplomatically, compassionately and gracefully. You will understand what your needs are and communicate them both personally and professionally. This is important, because solid, clear communication impacts all types of relationships. The throat chakra is associated with the following characteristics:
- Your level of emotional honesty
- Your capacity to express your truth and speak out your needs
- Communication – (external/internal)
- Ability to handle disagreements and conflict
- The depth and quality of your relationships
- Inclination to create and project your ideas into reality
- Achieving your vocation and purpose in life
- Your ability to live an authentic life
Imbalances Found in the Throat Chakra
If you find it difficult to express your truth, your genuine inner feelings and thoughts, then your throat chakra may be unbalanced or blocked. A blocked throat chakra will leave you feeling unable to express important feelings that eventually will lead to an internal battle. We’ve all experienced a ‘lump in the throat’ at times when expressing our truth in challenging situations, and an extreme form may be a bad case of laryngitis. Evidently, being unable to express ourselves will ultimately intensify any feelings of insecurity, nervousness, anxiety or shyness. The polar opposite might develop as well, where you become aggressive, callous, and unable to hear the opinions of others. Bear in mind, it’s not only associated with the throat, but the ears, shoulders and arms, so other symptoms, such as a stiff neck, tight shoulders, hearing problems, tinnitus, bronchitis and thyroid imbalances can manifest.
Signs of an Over-active Throat Chakra:
- Excessive talking or speaking inappropriately
- Inability to listen to others
- Telling lies, unable to keep your word or secrets
- Arrogance and overly-opinionated
- Overbearing, critical and judgmental
Signs of an Under-active Throat Chakra:
- Meek voice, tendency to whisper
- Fear of speaking out and standing up for oneself
- Unable to articulate and express feelings
- Timid and suppressed feelings
- Lack of purpose in life
Balancing and Healing the Throat Chakra
There are many different ways to heal an unbalanced throat chakra. The more in touch you are with your feelings, the easier it will be to speak your truth, express your creativity and self in positive ways.
Singing and Chanting
The best way to activate, open and clear your throat is by singing. You can sing any music you love, chant mantras, or join a kirtan group, which is call-and-response chanting.

Crystal Healing
Most blue crystals or stones work best to heal the throat chakra. You can wear a necklace of your choice, or place a crystal on your throat for 15 to 20 minutes a few times a week. The following stones are powerful crystals to heal your throat: lapus lazuli, amazonite, blue kyanite, and apatite and turquoise to name just a few. Don’t forget to clean your crystals with water and salt on a regular basis. Ensure that it can be cleaned in water beforehand too, as certain types of crystals can dissolve completely! Smudge them with sage in that case!
Affirmations and Journaling
Affirmations can be very helpful when you’re working on personal issues and trying to transform mental and emotional blocks. It’s also wise to tune into your emotions through journaling, giving you a method to explore your internal world where you can tap into deeper feelings to better understanding where they come from. Once you recognize them, it will be easier to affirm new belief systems that correlate to your personal needs. Here are a few affirmations to explore:
“I can find the right words in all situations.”
“I speak my true thoughts with ease.”
“I claim and honor my true voice.”
“I am a compassionate listener.”
“I communicate with ease.”
“I vocalize my feelings.”
Last but not least, speaking your truth with love is of utmost importance. Being able to share your feelings with a dear friend can help during times of profound frustration, anger, or sadness. Learning to express your feelings in a safe environment is the first step. Once there, a little bit of courage and self-love will guide you to a new path of clear, loving communication and creative expression.
